An alternative analgesic agent for intra-articular corticosteroid injections (IAI) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) – a fentanyl lollipop
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Intra articular injections are an effective and widely used technique that involes the direct application of a corticosteroid compound such as triamcinalone hexacetonide into a joint with active synovitis. Local IAIs can avoid many of the unwanted adverse effects of sytemic steroids but in children younger than 11 years or those with a polyarticular presentation a general anaesthetic is typically required. Traditional local anaesthetic agents include topical agents such as lignocaine or gaseous agents such as entonox (nitrous oxide). We have introduced an unique form of analgesia for this procedure since the establishment of our national unit in 2006 in form of fentanyl lollipops (Actiq).

PReS-FINAL-2167: What is the potential of intra-articular corticosteroid injections to induce sustained remission in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis?
Introduction Intra-articular corticosteroid injections (iacis) are widely used in the management of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Although this therapeutic intervention is generally considered for the treatment of children with arthritis in a small number of joints, the strategy of injecting simultaneously multiple joints has been advocated in children with polyarthritis. H...
متن کاملNitrous Oxide sedation for intra-articular injection in juvenile idiopathic arthritis
BACKGROUND Intra-articular corticosteroid injection in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is often associated with anxiety and pain. Recent reports advocate the use of nitrous oxide (NO), a volatile gas with analgesic, anxiolytic and sedative properties. OBJECTIVE To prospectively evaluate the effectiveness and safety of NO analgesia for intra-articular corticosteroid injection in JIA, and t...
متن کاملIntra-articular corticosteroid injections in juvenile idiopathic arthritis
Therapeutic intervention with intra-articular steroid injections in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has evolved from experience with adults with inflammatory joint disease, with the earliest report being published in 1951. The technique has subsequently been introduced into paediatric rheumatology practice, although much of the evidence supporting its use remains anecdotal or based on open,...
متن کاملSedation methods for intra-articular corticosteroid injections in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: a review
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in children. Intra-articular corticosteroid injection (IASI), one of the cornerstones of treatment for this disease, is usually associated with anxiety and pain. IASI in JIA may be performed under general anesthesia, conscious sedation, or local anesthesia alone. Currently, there is no widely accepted standard of c...

AIMS To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nitrous oxide-oxygen for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) undergoing intra-articular corticosteroid injection. METHODS A total of 55 consecutive patients with JIA undergoing intra-articular corticosteroid injection, using self administered nitrous oxide-oxygen for analgesia were studied. Patient, nurse, and parent pain scores were c...
